Dr Surya Mani Tripathi, PhD, LLB, RTTP
Dr Surya Mani Tripathi is an international lawyer and registered Indian attorney. He is working as Global Head Legal Services at ICRISAT Hyderabad, India, and is involved in the overall management of legal and IPR issues related to operations and research of ICRISAT, legislative advocacy, and statutory compliances.
He has been awarded a law degree (LL.B.) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur with a Microsoft IPR scholarship award. He also holds a Ph.D. degree in plant science with a CSIR-India fellowship and an International Masters in Biosafety with a fellowship of UNIDO and the Government of Italy. He is a recipient of an Associate Fellowship -CISDL, Canada, and a Scroll of Honour by the International Council of Jurists. He also holds a Diploma on Fostering Innovation and Commercialisation of Intellectual Property Rights from the Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Denmark, and a Certificate on Law of International Organizations by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
He was instrumental in the establishment and sustainable operations of the Intellectual Property Facilitation Cell (IPFC) and WIPO’s Technology Innovation Support Center (TISC) at ICRISAT. He is a member of various committees including Ministry of S&T, Government of India-DST's Subject Expert Committee (SEC-AAS) under the WISESCOPE Fellowship Program for Women, Telangana State Biodiversity Board, Technology Evaluation Committee of Bionest-NIPER-Guwahati, Society for Technology Management (STEM), Ministry of MSME, Government of India- Committee on Intellectual Property (IP) Commercialization.
His areas of work include legal drafting, legal risk management, legal compliances and advisory, IPRs, IP portfolio analysis and licensing etc.. As a techno-legal expert and solicitor he is also facilitating transfer of technologies, contracts negotiations and IPR commercialization. He has extensively worked in the field of Patents, Geographical Indications, Plant Varieties protection, technology commercialization, and has contributed to various national and international forums.
